KASHAYADHARA

Dhara is the continuous flow of medicated oil/decoction/milk/ghee/other liquids on a part/whole body. It is a type of Drava Sweda (liquid fomentation) as it brings perspiration (sweating) to body. When the medicine used is Kashaya or herbal decoction, the procedure is termed as Kashayadhara. Based on the part of body used it can be classified as Ekangadhara (on a part of body), Sarvangadhara (whole body), Sirodhara (on forehead).

Procedure:

Patient is made to sit on a chair. Thalam (herbal powder or oil) is applied to the bregma region of head. Initially a head and shoulder massage is performed by the therapist sitting on the chair followed by an abhyanga(oil massage) after making the patient to lie on the pathi(massage table). A ear plug made of cotton piece is kept such that the herbal decoction does not enter the ears. Required quantity of medicine is heated and the temperature is checked by the therapist using the dorsum of their hands. After this, the two therapists will stand on either sides of the table and pour the herbal decoction in a continuous stream over the body at a uniform height of 12 angula (6-9 inches). The procedure is carried out in 7 positions- sitting, supine, right lateral, supine, left lateral, supine and sitting. The medicine flowing out will be collected and reheated by the therapist. The duration of the treatment will be approximately 45 minutes.

Post Procedure:

After the Kashayadhara, the medicine is wiped out well from the body, and is made to take a warm water shower. Afterwards, a thalam or herbal powder is applied on the bregma area of forehead to regulate the body temperature. A glass of warm herbal water will also be provided to drink, which is good for calming the body

Medicines used:

The medicine taken for the preparation of the herbal decoction is decided by the concerned physician based on the health condition of each individual. Some of the medicines used are Dasamoolam kashayam, Nalpamaradi kashayam, Triphala kashayam etc.

FAQ'S

Kashayadhara is a traditional Kerala Ayurvedic therapy where warm herbal decoction (kashaya) is poured in a continuous stream over the body to induce therapeutic sweating. It belongs to the Drava Sweda (liquid fomentation) category. Unlike Tailadhara (medicated oil) or Ksheeradhara (medicated milk), Kashayadhara specifically uses herbal decoctions, making it especially effective for conditions involving pain, inflammation, stiffness, and metabolic disorders. At The Nattika Beach, each Kashayadhara session is customised with physician-prescribed decoctions based on your individual health condition.

A Kashayadhara session at The Nattika Beach lasts approximately 45 minutes and follows a structured 7-position protocol — sitting, supine, right lateral, supine, left lateral, supine, and sitting. It begins with a head and shoulder massage followed by a full-body abhyanga (oil massage). Two trained therapists then pour warm herbal decoction from a height of 12 angula (6–9 inches) in a continuous stream over the body. The decoction is collected, reheated, and reused throughout the session. After the therapy, the body is wiped clean, a warm shower is given, and herbal warm water is provided to help calm and stabilise the system.

Kashayadhara offers a wide range of therapeutic and rejuvenative benefits. It is highly effective for joint stiffness, body pain, inflammation, fractures, and burning sensations. It also enhances blood circulation, boosts metabolism (Agni/digestive fire), improves stamina, and sharpens sensory clarity. It can be used both as a curative therapy for those with specific health conditions and as a rejuvenative treatment for healthy individuals seeking wellness and detoxification. It is suitable for both acute and chronic conditions under physician supervision.

The herbal decoction used in Kashayadhara is individually prescribed by the resident Ayurvedic physician at The Nattika Beach based on each guest’s specific health condition and constitution (prakriti). Commonly used decoctions include Dasamoolam Kashayam (a ten-root formulation known for its anti-inflammatory properties), Nalpamaradi Kashayam (effective for skin conditions and circulation), and Triphala Kashayam (a detoxifying blend of three fruits). This personalised approach ensures that the treatment delivers targeted therapeutic outcomes rather than a generic one-size-fits-all experience.

Kashayadhara is generally safe when performed under qualified Ayurvedic physician supervision. Some guests may temporarily experience mild symptoms such as cold, fever, headache, or fatigue during or after the session — these are typically signs of the body’s detoxification response and are managed by the physician at The Nattika Beach. Cotton ear plugs are used throughout the procedure to prevent the decoction from entering the ears. A post-treatment protocol including a warm shower, herbal thalam application on the forehead, and warm herbal water intake helps regulate body temperature and supports recovery. Guests are advised to inform the physician of any existing health conditions prior to the session.
