ELAKIZHI

“ELA” means “LEAF”  “KIZHI” means “POUCH”

This is a type of sweda where the fomentation is done by the heated bolus bag containing leaves of medicinal plants.

Ingredients:

  • Leaves of various herbs (chopped into pieces) 1/2kg
  • Rock salt – 15 gms
  •  Lemons – 5 No.
  •  Medicated oil – 200 ml
  • Sathapushpa – 50gms
  • Methika – 10gms
  • Haridra/turmeric – 10gms
  • Lashuna – 5

The leaves commonly used:

  • Eranda (Ricinus communis)
  • Amlika (Tamarindus indica)
  • Karanja (Pongamia glabra)
  • Shigru (Moringa oleifera)  
  • Dhatura (Datura metel)
  • Arka (Calatropis procera)  
  • Nirgundi (Vitex Negundo)

Method of preparation (4 potalis)

  • An iron vessel is heated on a gas stove.
  • To this required quantity of neem oil\medicated oil is poured .
  • When it is heated chopped lemon is added and cooked until its consistency turns off.
  • Then the scraped coconut is added and fried to attain light reddish brown colour.
  • The required leaves are added and cooked till it attains soft consistency to this the vathahara drugs like methika, sathawa,etc are added.
  • Thus prepared medicine is tied equally in to 4 potalis.

Method of tying the pottali

  • A 4 cloth piece of size 18×18 inches is taken
  • Prepared ingredients are placed in the centre of the cloth.
  • Four edges of the cloth are held tightly so that medicine accumulates at its centre.
  • One of the corners of cloth is held separately into which the rest three are inserted and wrapped well.
  • Then using a thread the wrapped portion is tied tightly from top to bottom and vice versa and knotted at top so that the ingredients are held firmly.

Mode of administration /procedure:

  • The bolus (potali) should be gently applied by two masseurs standing on either sides of the droni in synchronized manner after abhyanga (oil massage)
  • The bolus is applied hot to the skin after it is smeared with warm medicated oil.
  •  To maintain its temperature, the bolus is intermittently kept warm by heating on the frying pan.

Complications

  • Fainting
  • Burn
  • Rashes

Indications:

Neuro muscular disorders-Pakshavadha (Hemiplegia), Gridhrasi (Sciatica), Rheumatological conditions-Arthritis due to various reasons.

Contraindication:

Taruna jwara (Acute fever), Atisara (Diarrhoea), Raktapitta (Hermorrhagic disorders), Twak vikara (Infective Eczema etc).
