Even though the Origin of Ayurveda is from the Indian subcontinent the popularity of Ayurveda in Kerala is more compared with other Indian states.
The balanced climatic condition, the abundance of natural herbs from the long range of Western Ghats and the traditional awareness about the science among the people makes it the best place to experience Ayurveda of Kerala in its purest form.
The classical text books such as Sahasrayogam, Vaidyamalika written in the local language are evidence of the popularity of Ayurveda in Kerala, India, even in the olden days. Many of the classical treatments, massaging methods etc. are developed by the Vaidyas in Kerala and later followed by the whole world. These treatments are called as Keraleeya Chikithsa (Treatments of Kerala)
The propagation of Ayurveda happed through various Vaidya families and the first systematic study of Ayurveda also started in Kerala. First ever study centre for Ayurveda in India, under the Government not in Gurukula model was established at Thiruvananthapuram in 1889 A.D. marking a significant milestone in the history of Ayurvedic Kerala.
