Even though the Origin of Ayurveda is from the Indian subcontinent the popularity of Ayurveda in Kerala is more compared with other Indian states, making it the best place for Ayurveda in India.

The balanced climatic condition, the abundance of natural herbs from the long range of Western Ghats and the traditional awareness about the science among the people makes it the ideal place to experience authentic Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala in their purest form.

The classical text books such as Sahasrayogam, Vaidyamalika written in the local language are evidence of the long-standing Ayurveda history in Kerala, showcasing its popularity even in the olden days. Many of the classical Kerala Ayurveda treatments, including traditional Ayurvedic massage in Kerala, were developed by the Vaidyas in Kerala and later followed by the whole world. These treatments are called as Keraleeya Chikithsa (Kerala Ayurveda treatments).

The propagation of Ayurveda in Kerala happened through various Vaidya families, laying the foundation for formal Ayurveda study in Kerala. First ever Government Ayurveda college in Kerala, outside the Gurukula model, was established at Thiruvananthapuram in 1889 A.D., marking a key milestone in the history of Kerala Ayurvedic heritage.

Today, Ayurveda tourism in Kerala continues to thrive, with many travelers visiting Ayurvedic resorts in Kerala to experience healing the traditional way.
