Water is considered as the basis of life in living things. A normal person is supposed to drink adequate amount of water throughout the day by making a habit of drinking frequently in little amounts rather than a big gulp all at once, a practice emphasized in Ayurvedic wellness retreats in Kerala.
Cold water
Drinking cold water is considered ideal for weakness, giddiness, burning sensation and thirst. Cold water helps in conditions like bleeding disorders, alcohol intoxication, poison and vomiting.
Contraindications of cold water:
Rhinitis (cold/flu), disorders pertaining to imbalanced Vatha dosha, throat pain, hiccoughs and conditions like fever. It is also not advised if digestion is weak, particularly if a person has bloating and flatulence. Taking cold water is also contraindicated soon after taking of ghee, both in medicated form and also in food.This aligns with the Ayurvedic dietary principles practiced at Ayurveda resorts in Kerala.
Hot water
It is considered as a digestive stimulant, good for throat and very light in property. Hot water cleanse the urinary bladder, relieves bloating and weak digestion. It is advisable in cough, breathing difficulty, hiccough, fever and indigestion. It is suited to health in most conditions.
Boiled and cooled water
It is light in property and suitable in Pitha imbalance, in diseases due to over intake of alcohol. This water cause imbalance of all the three doshas or bio energies namely, Vatha, Pitha and Kapha when kept overnight and is not considered good.
Drinking of water should be moderate in conditions of loss of taste, common cold, swellings, skin diseases, eye diseases, diabetes and ulcers. Water drunk in excess, even in severe thirst will get converted to excess Kapha or Pitha in the body.
