Uro vasthy is an important Ayurveda procedure done to treat various diso0rders related to chest region.
The word Uras means chest region and vasthy means to hold or to retain. Thus urovasthy is the procedure in which the specified medicated oil is retained for a stipulated period in the chest area by a special frame made up of black gram flour. This helps to relieve pain and discomfort in uras region. This procedure act as a combined therapy of snehana and swedana (oleation and fomentation).
Procedure:
After the examination of the patient, he is asked to lie down comfortably on the table on supine position. The specified area (chest region) is prepared for the treatment. Clean the exposed part with cloth or cotton
A special dough made of black gram flour is shaped into a ring is placed over the area, keeping the tender point as Centre. The frame should be approximately 5 inch in diameter and 1.5 inch height .Seal the gap between the skin and paste, by pressing the paste against the skin by wetting with few drops of water. Sealing is done in both outer and inner sides of ring.
The prescribed medicated oil is warmed to required temperature .Then the oil is slowly poured from the walls of the ring into the frame placed over uras region. Therapist should confirm the tolerance of the heat while pouring the oil by communicating with the patient.
After the specified period of time slowly take out the oil from the ring with the help of a cotton roll. Then take out the ring and give a gentle massage over the area.
Benefits:
This treatment pacifies Vatha dosha, nourishes and strengthen muscles, nerves, bones, ligaments and tissues of the chest region.
It also helps to improve the circulation, strengthens the cardiac muscles and improves the inhalation and exhalation.
The duration of treatment depends on the health condition of the patient and as per the instructions of the Doctor.
Complication and Management:
While doing Uro vasthy there are potential complications that can arise, particularly if the treatment is not performed correctly.
Burns:
If the oil is excessively hot, it can cause burns or discomfort. Therapist must ensure that the temperature of oil is optimum. In case of burn treatment for the burns should be given immediately.
Some people may experience discomfort during or after the procedure.
Then immediately stop the procedure and should provide necessary treatments.
