THALAPOTHICHIL

The fame of Kerala specific Ayurveda treatments are gaining day by day. It is due to the evidence that is pronounced in the State of Kerala through the health of the natives living in Kerala. Those people who were accustomed to the traditional Kerala Ayurvedic practices are leading a healthy life even in their late 80s and 90s. This is the reason why people throughout the World wish to adopt the healthy habits which made Keralites to achieve their health goals.

Among the traditional Kerala Ayurvedic treatments, the most popular would be the Thalapothichil treatment, where medicated paste is applied over the head to make a covering over the scalp and hair.

This is basically regarded as a cooling technique, but in reality the effect depends on the durg paste that is used. Depending on the nature of the drugs that are used, an Ayurvedic Physician can make individual specific alterations in the action of this treatment.

Thalapothichil may be regarded as an improved version of Siro Pichu treatment. In Siro Pichu, it is some medicated oil that is kept as a padding over the scalp, but in Thalapothichil it is a freshly prepared drug paste that is applied. The drug paste may or may not contain oils, but also contain other ingredients like buttermilk, milk or decoctions depending on the vikruty (imbalances) of each individual.

Benefits:

Thalapothichil is regarded as one of the ultimate therapeutic solutions for unsolved insomnia and stress relief.

Even though, due to its cooling nature it is regarded as a good treatment for chronic sinusitis.

Use of specific drug combinations for Thalapothichil can make it beneficial for treatment of hair loss and premature greying of hair.

Thalapothichil is not a stand-alone treatment in Ayurveda. It should be done by proper preparation of the body to make the Doshas able to receive the effect of this treatment.

Improper application of Thalapothichil may cause some adverse effects. For example, it should be strictly avoided while having upper respiratory tract inflammations. If done in such situations, this may lead to aggravation of the condition. Therefore, Thalapothichil should be done only under the direct medical supervision of an expert Ayurveda Doctor.

Indication:

Chavitti thirumal can be done on those with aches and pains in the whole body, mental depression, and sciatica, those who wish to improve libido, in rheumatism, obesity, water retention, muscular spasms.

Contraindications:

In acute sinusitis, where there is improper Dosha pāka (a particular stage of Dosha transformation).

Insomnia due to causes unrelated to stress and tension should not be given Thalapothichil, unless found necessary by the treating Ayurvedic Physician as this may worsen the psychological balance of the person.

Those who cannot take proper rest after the treatment should not be given Thalapothichil as this treatment requires a lot of refrainments from daily activities like travelling, swimming and physical exertions.

Those people who are having issues related to circulation and balance should be given special care during and after the procedure, because in  some people, there may be aggravation of such issues and may require immediate attention from an Ayurveda Doctor to manage the condition.

However, when done in the proper manner with proper choice of the medicines and proper restrictions after the treatment as directed by the treating Physician, this treatment can make wonderful results. A well-modulated environment and an experienced Medical Team is all that’s necessary to make it happen well.
