TARPANAM

There are seven ‘Kriyakalpa’ or procedure for eyes as explained in Ayurveda and ‘Tarpanam’ is one among them. ‘Tarpanam’ is a ‘Kriyakalpa’ in which medicated ghee is pooled over both the eyes over a stipulated duration of time which may vary according to the different eye disorders. The word ‘Tarpanam’ itself means one which provides ‘Tripti’ that is satiation or content to the eyes.

‘Tarpanam’ is highly beneficial in conditions which causes darkness in the eyes, reduced tear secretion, squint, dry eyes, blurred vision and falling of eyelashes. This procedure is generally not done on cloudy days, too hot or cold climate and in person who are grief stricken, tired and having giddiness.

The entire procedure is generally done after preparing the person by subjecting them to detoxification procedures like ‘Panchakarma’. The person is made to lie in a supine position in a comfortable manner in rooms without excess sunlight, dust and wind. A smooth dough is prepared prior to the procedure using green gram flour and sometimes barley powder can be added to this. A localized massage and mild heat is applied.

Once everything is ready a firm circular frame having a height of around 3 centimeters is made around the eyes. Different kind of medicated ghee are used for this procedure suitable to the disorders. The suitable medicated ghee is slowly poured on to the eyes till the eyelashes are immersed. Then the person is asked to slowly blink the eyes to get the proper benefit. The duration of the procedure can vary according to the severity and nature of disorder.

Once the procedure is finished with the ghee is drained by making a small hole at the outer canthus of the eye and then cleaned. This is followed by mild fomentation using ‘Kashayam’ or warm water. Mild herbal smoke is given for inhalation and warm water washing maybe done. The person should avoid exposure to bright light, dust and heat.

A person after undergoing ‘Tarpanam’ usually feels clarity of vision, Clear sense of the eyes, lightness of eyes and sound sleep. Sometimes this procedure can be done alternatively with ‘Putapakam’ which is a similar treatment with the exception of the medicine used. In ‘Putapakam’ the juice of several herbs cooked in fire is used and it is greatly beneficial in people who have severe heaviness and weakness of eyes post ‘Tarpanam’ to promote strength to the eyes.
