MUKHALEPAM

The face is the representation of the self.

Mukalepam, a facial treatment which has its roots in Ayurveda has evolved into a most sought after treatment in the contemporary cosmetic practice too!

Mukalepam is the application of a customised herbal paste over the face in a particular thickness depending on the Dosha nature of the individual for a particular period of time.

The herbal paste is formulated as per the directions given by an Ayurveda Doctor by considering the skin type of the individual in terms of Ayurvedic evaluations. This technique has proven to be a great solution for improving the radiance and glow of facial skin which has become a necessity in an environment contaminated with pollution.

Procedure:

Prior to the application of the paste medicine, the skin is cleaned well by using specially curated medicated liquids. This helps in improving the skin texture to absorb the medical properties of the paste medicine.

In certain cases, a slight local steam is also used to open up the micropores of the skin. These preparatory procedures helps to detoxify the minutes channels of the skin.

These preparatory procedures may differ, depending on the skin conditions of each individual.

After preparing and cleaning the skin as per the advice by the Doctor, the specific paste medicine is applied over the face and given a slight massage. This medicated paste is kept over the face for specified duration, depending on the Dosha nature of the individual, and then wiped-off or washed with herbal liquids.

Sometimes a face massage may be done after the procedure also for certain skin types.

These steps may vary depending on the Doctor’s advice which is made after proper evaluation of each individual’s imbalances.

In today’s fast paced world contaminated with pollutants and stress, this procedure becomes even more popular for the following reasons:

  • This is a proven strategy to counter oxidative stress and environmental damages that occur over the skin.
  • Due to the property of promoting collagen and elastin production, this treatment is chosen by those people who require some forms of healing of tissues.
  • Mukalepa improves the skin tone by removing the wrinkles and lines.
  • Sometimes, hyperpigmentations and acne may be the result of superficially seated vitiated doshas. By proper choice of medicines for mukhalepa, it can be highly effective in the treatment of acne and hyperpigmentations.
  • Most of the formulations contain ingredients that improve the tensile and resistance of the tissues. Thus, mukhalepa acts by improving the acid-base balance and general immunity of the cutaneous tissue.

Contraindications:

There is no strict contraindication for this procedure, unless there are any infected pimples or open wounds.

Some people may become sensitive to certain ingredients that are used in the formulations but this can be altered by an Ayurveda Doctor based on the Dosha nature of each individual.

It’s not a usual practice to do mukhalepa on a daily basis unless specified in certain skin conditions. Therefore, the frequency of doing mukhalepa and the medicine used for each time should be decided carefully after examination by an expert in Ayurveda.

Considering all these facts, Mukhalepa remains to be one of the most sought after treatments for the face due to its capability of individual customisation and easier application.
