LEPAM

Lepam, also known as lepanam or lepana means application or paste. It is a treatment where a prepared herbal paste is applied to the affected part or entire body, to promote healing of the area.

Procedure

After a detailed examination of the patient by the concerned physician, suitable medicine for preparation of lepa is determined. The medicine is prepared by mixing the required quantity of herbal powder In either oil, ghee, milk, herbal decoction,buttermilk, fermented gruel, or any other medium depending on the stage and severity of the condition. After cleaning the affected part, the prepared lepa is applied uniformly with an approximate thickness of 6mm. It is then left for 30-45 minutes such that the skin absorbs the medicine to its deeper layers.

Post-Procedure:

Once the lepa gets dried, it is washed off with warm or luke warm water, and patted dry. Bandaging may also be done after the application of lepa, in cases where the medicine needs to be retained for a longer period, if recommended by the consulting doctor.

Advantages of lepam:

Lepam is highly effective in relieving pain and inflammation, it improves skin texture and tone. Lepam on the head (siro lepam/thalapothichil) helps to reduce stress, promote relaxation and improve brain functioning. Lepam is also effective in wound healing, treating skin conditions like eczema, acne, psoriasis etc and also enhances the circulation.

Complications and Management:

Allergic reactions like rashes or burning sensation may occur in some patients if they are sensitive to certain ingredients in the herbal powder. All symptoms will be managed accordingly by the physician.
